I’m discovering Rothko. It doesn’t make me cry, but it is astonishing.
Rothko didn’t have that archaic message that Jung talks about at first. . .but he discovered late in life this build up of paint, so maybe he got the message later. Jung speaks of it as a secret.
It’s through that build-up of paint – the way one color bleeds into another – that he gets to a luminosity that’s incredible. It’s more than paint, it’s a spiritual thing.
But Mark Rothko got rich, fabulously rich. He became a millionaire from that. You can’t live with that. With his conscience and his self-knowledge he could not live with it.
your account of the ‘luminosity’ is profoundly moving………………….
